The VCON ViGO desktop IP-based Personal Videoconferencing Systems has been chosen for the U.S.Navy Marine Corps Intranet network and a deployment of many thousands of units seems likely

11 August 2003. Electronic Data Systems (EDS), who manages the NMCI (Navy Marine Corps Intranet) network, has officially certified and chosen the VCON ViGO(TM) personal desktop videoconferencing system for data collaboration, visual communication and information sharing between NMCI users. The NMCI network links more than 360,000 desktops across the United States, and sites in Puerto Rico, Iceland and Cuba.
The VCON ViGO desktop videoconferencing system passed a rigorous interoperability-testing program with gateways, MCUs, and other H.323-based videoconferencing equipment before being selected as the service of choice. The VCON ViGO was chosen because of its ease of installation, reliability, high data rates, and excellent video quality.
Being the first ever to provide a videoconferencing solution to the NMCI network is a great honor, stated Gordon Daugherty, president, VCON, Inc. The level of communication our armed forces require is critical, and breakdown is unacceptable. VCON has stepped up to the challenge of offering network users an uninterrupted, reliable service. We are looking forward to building a prosperous relationship.
According the NMCIs Web site, [the NMCI] will bring together almost 400,000 Navy personnel, military, government civilians and contractors into a single computing environment. Also stated on the Web site by RADM Charles Munns, director NMCI, By bringing together the Navy and Marine Corps ashore workforce into a common IT infrastructure, NMCI will foster greater levels of communication, collaboration and sharing of ideas than would ever have been possible before.
The VCON ViGO is versatile and provides high-quality audio and video conferencing over the IP network. The USB-connected appliance can be used with either a laptop or desktop PC at data rates up to 1.5Mbps. The user interface is friendly and intuitive, making a video call as easy as dialling a phone. VCON ViGO also comes with vClip, a video email program allowing users to record a voice and video stream, and either save it to disk or send it in an email message.
